Plus Size Models Grace the Runways of New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week has just ended and even though I was unable to attend or even get close to the shows I was still keeping up with what was going on in the big apple. Last year Hijab Couture was a big hit on the runway, this year at least thirty plus sized models made their way through show after show.

In these recent years the fashion world has seen diversity and welcomed it with open arms, as it should. We’ve seen models and fashion designers with disabilities, designers combining their culture with fashion, and now women who don’t wear a size 2 in jeans are finally seeing representation and I love it. I always say this but it’s a true thing; the fashion industry is an ever changing world that pushes its own boundaries at every chance. Who says diversity in fashion is excluded to just clothing?

In the past there seems to have been a status quo that the fashion world is represented by women that do not represent the female population. It’s been established that the average size of the female population in the United States is not a size two, it’s a size 16. As a member of the big girl community who loves fashion, happy isn’t even the word to describe how I feel knowing that I along with a million other women were being represented this year at New York Fashion Week.

Big names in the fashion including Michael Kors and Christian Siriano had models like Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine, Marquita Pring and Precious Lee presenting the designer’s latest designs this year.

As the years pass we are getting to see so much diversity included in the fashion industry from the clothes to the designers and the models. I’m beyond grateful that the fashion industry does not have closed eyes and ears. People who aren’t tall and skinny are being represented and that gives hopes and dreams to the normal people out there who love fashion.

I can’t wait to see what else the fashion industry has in store!
